Autumn Term 1957

23 Sept 57

The train arrived at Leeds on time. I couldn't get a taxi so went by bus to the bus station - had 3 minutes to wait for the Wetherby bus - not bad timing! It was raining when I got to Wetherby so I went to Dalby's and ordered a taxi. I met Lucy, the cook and she told me that I was the second girl to arrive - it was four bob for the taxi. When I arrived I went up to the sewing room - met Rossy and then dumped my cases in my dorm. I am dorm leader in Pavlova with Irene Evans, Anthea, Sylvia, Sue Townsend and a new girl, Bridget.

Then I went down to the form room. Alan, Sam, Peem, Wendy and Chau were painting the place. One wall is pink, one blue, one green and one yellow with a white ceiling and grey doors. It looks Ghastly!!! Sam helped me over with my trunk and I unpacked. Viv and Ruth arrived so I had a natter on with them. I will be doing French with Viv and Latin with Ruth. I met Brian and Frances and we talked about me passing Eng Lit. Brian seems very pleased and says I can resit the Lang. I owe Sam a shilling - he took five subjects and only passed two - Lang and Lit. He's doing advanced English next year. Mick arrived at about five. His Ma thanked me for my letter . We both did tea orderley and had the muck - tomatoe soup, baked beans and bits of shrivelled bacon, and cake with lemon cheese.

After washup I made some beds up for Rosamond and she seemed very pleased. Wendy just hid from Rosamond all the time.

Well it's halfpast eight now. It is nice and quiet here in the library - there's only Poggy and myself in.

While I was doing tea orderly I spoke to Roger and John Woods. Roger has been to Holland, France and Spain this hols -lucky thing.

Chau got on my train at M'chester but I wasn't far enough up the train so I missed him.

I am ordering a form photo from the old man.

29 Sept 57

Judy declined from being on the tuck shop committee so Fiona asked me. On Thursday I served for the first time in the T.S. - it was jolly good but I was nervous.

On Thursday we started lessons. In the morning we had music - just Mick, Ruth C-B and I.  A wasp came on the table and Mick flicked it with his rough book. Of course it flew up and landed on my neck just below my ear - it clung to me and .stung me - my first wasp sting ever!!

We had the dance last night - am still on the dance committee - it wasn't bad. All the good dancers have left now. The dance got warmed up when form III & IV had gone.

There is only Judy and I doing Physio - gosh it's chronic.

Well I think I must close now. I am sitting on the wall outside and it's freezing.

P.S. Being a dorm leader is quite good fun except for getting up in the morning!!

Mick is a blessed nuisance - he is mucking up the form room already.
